Car Alarm Verification - Insurance Approved Alarms

We provide a car alarm verification service for insurance approved car alarms and immobilisers. Your device must be on the Thatcham approved list with each car alarm fitted to Cat 1 installation standards. An MESF certificate can then be issued for insurance purposes.

Cat 1 Car Alarm verification for £149 *see notes below

Cat 2 Immobiliser verification for £125 *see notes below

Insurance Approved Alarms

Insurance approved alarms are systems that are ‘Thatcham Approved’. This is a process where manufacturers submit their products to the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre (MIRRC) based in Thatcham, for vigorous testing against benchmark standards. Once passed systems can be marketed as ‘Thatcham Approved Cat 1 Car Alarms’ or ‘Cat 2 Immobiliser’ devices.

This process is quite expensive for manufacturers and consequently there are many alarm products that are not approved. Click here to find a list of Cat 1 alarm devices (scroll to page 16). Please note this page also contains a list of deleted devices.

We fit aftermarket systems from Clifford, Avital, Hornet, Metasystem, Sigma, Sterling, Toad and Viper. However we can also verify other systems on the Thatcham list.

It is important to note that these are aftermarket systems and not OEM. Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) devices are fitted at the time of vehicle manufacture and are often an integral part of the car.

Aftermarket Car Alarm

It is part of the approval process that an aftermarket car alarm is also fitted to the correct installation standards. These are not DIY systems.

Our verification process also checks the alarm installation wiring and set up, and if these are not to Cat 1 standards then the security system cannot be verified.

Insurance Certificate

There are many reasons why a new car alarm certificate for insurance may be required. Paper copies are easily lost or damaged, or customers may find themselves with a certificate from the expired organisation known as VSIB.

Customers will be issued with a Mobile Electronics and Security Federation (MESF) replacement certificate, with legitimate impression stamp that can be felt through all copies.

We cannot provide a Thatcham Recognised Installer (TRI) database entry, unless the system was originally fitted by us. This is due to the database entry requiring the TRI code for the original installer.

We also no longer issue VSIB certificates as this organisation went into receivership in April 2009.

Alarm Requirements

Please note the charge made is for expert MESF and Thatcham Recognised Installer inspection. If your alarm does not meet the necessary standards, for any reason, then no certificate will be given even though the inspection charge is still to be paid.

The prices quoted on this page do not include any fault finding for systems that are not working perfectly. If your system needs adjusting or anything more, then a reasonable extra charge will be made.

Cat 2 Immobiliser Verification

Sometimes customers will require a Cat 2 Immobiliser certificate for insurance. Again your system will need to be on the Thatcham Cat 2 immobiliser list (scroll to second half of page 9 for aftermarket systems), and be suitably fitted to Cat 2 standards.

* Extra Parts and Labour will incur a reasonable additional charge as some vehicles require extra time for fitting e.g. Nissan Elgrand adds £80 to any alarm system, built motorhomes may need extra installation time, and door motor fitting is charged extra on a per door basis.

Payment can be made at the time of installation, via our mobile credit card machine.
